Electric vehicle sales in the US continue to see a significant uptick, with EV (BEV and PHEV) share of new light passenger vehicles (LPVs) reaching 7.05% in Q2 of 2022. times from the 2.44% EV sales share since the end of 2022. If the quarterly increase continues at 13% for Q3 and Q4, the Q4 sales share would reach 9.0%.

2021 was a huge year for overall electric vehicle sales in the US, but only California (13.4%) and the District of Columbia (11.2%) had a combined BEV and PHEV sales share of at least 10%. While EV registrations overall increased 59% in Q1 2021 versus Q1 2020, PHEV registrations more than doubled with an increase of 103.7%. EV registrations overall (BEV and PHEV) in Q1 2021 reached 125,513, a 65% increase over the 76,072 combined registrations in Q1 2020. See sample screenshots below.

Total US sales of plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs)—battery electric and plug-in hybrid electric—have increased in recent years, but still represent only about 0.7% of new vehicle sales in 2014 so far, up from 0.6% sales and use tax. However, the incentive does not apply to the purchase of PHEVs.
