GM has announced plans for public sales in 2010, and almost every carmaker now says it will sell PHEVs or highway-speed battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sometime after 2010. BYD has also begun selling a plug-in electric car with a backup gasoline engine, a move putting it ahead of GM, Nissan, and Toyota. Put simply, this little-known upstart has accelerated ahead of its much bigger rivals in the race to build an affordable electric car. market, where the economics of electric cars are not as compelling.
