Optimal charging of the combustion chambers is ensured by large intake and exhaust valves. The exhaust valves, which are subject to high thermal loads, are hollow and sodium-cooled.

The compressor wheel is being driven by hot exhaust gases coming out of the exhaust manifold. A wastegate opens to regulate the compressor drive power by letting excess exhaust gases escape through the exhaust pipe. Sodium-filled exhaust valves are designed for the higher combustion temperatures of the turbo system.
