Reciprocating engines can start up even when the grid has no power, which helps electric transmission grid operators match fluctuating power requirements and restore power after major storms. Power plants with large reciprocating engines are often located in states with significant renewable resources, specifically wind generation.

The pilot plant has been designed, building construction has been completed, and equipment installation is underway on the SwRI campus in San Antonio, TX. When completed, it will be the largest sCO 2 demonstration facility of its kind in the world, and will represent a significant step toward technology commercialization.

This is another important milestone for the Texas Clean Energy Project, coming on the heels of last month’s power purchase announcement with CPS Energy in San Antonio. Argon and H 2 SO 4 are by-products of the gasification process and would be made available for commercial sale. Commercial operation is scheduled for late 2014.
