Conventional CTL plant gasifies coal to produce a syngas which is then converted in a Fischer-Tropsch reactor to products. With oil prices surging in the summer of 2008, the annual increase in global emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) from oil, coal, gas and cement production appear to have halved according to preliminary estimates by the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency. per cent in 2008, compared to 3.3 per cent in 2007.
