The general principle for bidirectional charging is EVs can either feed power from a charged vehicle back into the house (vehicle-to-home or V2H) or interact with the electric grid itself (vehicle-to-grid or V2G). In case of power outage at home, the DC pins in the charger can send juice back into the house, keeping the lights on.

As if to confirm that notion, recently a Toyota spokesman in DC was denigrating plug-in hybrids as Hymotion/A123 and Rob Lowe were making a plug-in splash in Congressman Ed Markey's global warming committee. However, the cars can run only short distances before they run out of juice.

Once weve consolidated everything to depend on the grid, we can clean up everything by cleaning up the grid. Once electric cars are more common, demand for electricity will rise, and electricity producers will have to look at big generators such as dams, nuclear stations or decentralised wind turbines that feed in to the grid.
