California Air Resources Board studies show that battery electric vehicles emit at least 67% lower greenhouse gases than gasoline cars -- even more assuming renewables. A PHEV with only a 20-mile all-electric range is 62% lower (see printed page 95 in the 2004 study ).

In California, 20% of our electricity comes from zero CO2 renewables (sun, wind, geothermal), another 20% from zero CO2 hydro, and only 20.1% As more renewables come online, battery electrics just keep getting cleaner and greener.

In 2022, the EPA renewed the state’s capacity to make its own rules surrounding the sale of zero-emission vehicles and limitations on tailpipe emissions. In the EPA also reinstated a 2013 waiver of an early California zero-emission vehicle standard under the Clean Air Act, after the first waiver was issued in 1993.
