What's most interesting, however, is how easy (and cheap) it is to do a carbon emission-free 200 mile day in a 100 mile range electric vehicle, my 5 year old Toyota RAV4 EV. Zero Emission Vehicles don't pay bridge tolls during commute hours in California, so I saved about $5 each way zipping past the toll collectors.

But when you do, your car essentially becomes an electric vehicle with a gas-tank backup. The comparison keeps being raised, though studies are conclusive: The "well-to-wheel" emissions of electric vehicles are lower than those from gasoline internal combustion vehicles. You dont have to plug it in.

How about a car-mounted wind-generator? A car-mounted windmill would recover only a tiny amount of the energy spent to accelerate and keep the car moving and would significantly add to the vehicles drag -- and is thus not a feasible option. We can also extrapolate some data from experience with the RAV4EV all-electric vehicles.
