The Chinese plugless series/parallel hybrid will boast more torque than the Ford Ranger Raptor super-ute and – crucially – a full 3500kg braked towing capacity. More seriously, BYD is expected to introduce the first plug-in electric ute to Australia before the end of 2024 while the PHEV Ranger arrives in 2025.

Firstly, it lands the Chinese maker in Australia’s biggest sales segment and, as a plug-in hybrid , it is BYD’s first ICE-powered , CO2-emitting vehicle to go on sale here following the launch of three BEVs since 2022 – the Atto 3 , Dolphin and Shark. In a completely disrupted market, while diesel (-31% YoY) and petrol (-20%) were down in December, all electrified categories were shooting up, with HEVs up 133% YoY, while PHEVs jumped six-fold(!), 3, Passat, Golf PHEV, ID.4, and BEVs did even better, jumping 7-fold(!!!),

While BEVs were a hot item last month, jumping 81%, to a record 407.000 units, PHEVs were even hooter, shooting 205% in December, allowing them to end the year with 31% of plugin sales, up 5% from the 26% of 2019, giving credit to those that say that PHEVs will still be around for a while. So, Nimrod, didnt you realize that FCVs would cause CO2 emissions as well?
