What would happen when the cash for clunkers sales boom came to an end has been a question many automotive executives in the USA dared not think about. September 2009 light duty vehicle sales dropped back to pre-incentive lows with 745,997 cars and light duty trucks sold during the month according to Autodata.

Yesterday we told you how the cash for clunkers scheme has enjoyed early success in the USA. In all, passenger car sales dropped 10.6 Toyota : Reported July sales of 174,872 represented an 11.4 per cent to 566,527 with hybrids having a particularly good month. Reported sales jumped 31.8 per cent year on year.

The cash for clunkers campaign has given a massive boost to hybrid sales in the US, with a reported leap by 48.6 per cent, while Toyota saw a fall from 75 per cent to 62.5 Toyota : Still the hybrid sales leader, Toyota sold 24,191 units in the month including 543 of the new Lexus HS250. per cent to 12.1 per cent.
