In February, China’s Chery Automobile unveiled an electric concept car at the Detroit Auto Show. On Friday, the Renault-Nissan Alliance said it expects to roll out electric cars (and charging infrastructure) as part of a pilot project in central China’s Wuhan by 2011.

According to consultancy McKinsey, China’s car market will grow ten-fold from 2005 to 2030 which will increase demand for petrol and diesel from 110million tonnes to 500million tonnes, prompting a sharp rise in carbon emissions in a country that has already overtaken the US as the world’s biggest source of greenhouse gases.
