Oil and gas operations in the United States produce about 21 billion barrels of wastewater per year, with accompanying disposal costs of about $5 billion per year. CDI is a desalination method where an electrical potential is applied to high surface area electrodes to adsorb charged organic and inorganic species for desalination.
