Not all plug-in electric cars rely on battery power alone; some also have gasoline engines as backups, for longer range or more power. Last year, we identified six plug-in hybrid vehicles on sale during 2013. This year, the list gains three new entries (from BMW, Cadillac, and Mitsubishi) and loses one (the Fisker Karma).

The Model S is the best-selling plug-in car in the U.S. Don’t forget the Korean plug-ins. BMW – the Ultimate Electric Driving Machine? for 2016, followed by the Model X.

We took to the road to report on most of the new EVs hitting the market, as well as plug-in hybrids, fuel cell electric vehicles, hybrids and the best of the legacy internal combustion engine models. Our testers had similar (best in class) feelings about the new 2023 Toyota Prius and the 2022 BMW i4 M50.
