Early experiments used a dummy because the many incandescent lights needed to provide sufficient illumination made it too hot and bright for a person. In 1929, the BBC decided to give Baird’s system a try, performing some experimental broadcasts outside of normal hours. The image could be seen on a ground glass plate.

If the person altering the file uses a tool that supports content credentialing, information about the changes is added to the manifest that travels with the image. At the BBC, Ellis says they’ve already done trials of adding content-credential metadata to still images, but “where we need this to work is on the [social media] platforms.”
