Who, after all, hasn’t tired of having to plug in and unplug their phone and other rechargeable gizmos? Indeed, it’s hard to recharge or power a device when the air gap is just a few centimeters, much less a few meters. Wires have a lot going for them when it comes to moving electric power around, but they have their drawbacks too.

The fuel engine on the Volt is used to run the generator to recharge the battery when a trip exceeds 40 miles, and it’s rage on a full tank is around 400 miles. A key thing, he said, will be to recharge the batteries at an acceptable time for the electricity grid — to “make sure people aren’t charging at the very peak, peak time,” like late afternoon when the electricity grid is already weighted down by demands like air conditioning. Build the damn cars and watch us change our habits.

In a flurry of electric vehicle activity, three back-to-back announcements this week have placed a spotlight on Oregon’s plans to be the friendliest state in the nation in which to build, sell and buy electric cars. But most could build it for under $1k and mine gets the equivalent of 600mpg fuel cost wise.
