In Germany, a project led by electrolyte company Elyte Innovations GmbH is pursuing the recovery of the non-metallic components—including lithium salts, solvents and electrolyte additives—from spent lithium-ion batteries. The costly extraction of these materials entails numerous ecological risks.

Volkswagen’s Winterkorn: “great potential” in solid-state batteries, with possible 1,000 Wh/l, or 700 km range

Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen noted again the challenges of energy density, cost, reliability and lifespan for batteries enabling longer range electric mobility. Current Li-ion batteries, with about 260 Wh/l are enabling a range of some 190 km (118 miles), he said.

Volkswagen’s first two production battery-electric vehicles debut at Frankfurt

Volkswagen marked its serious entry into the battery-electric vehicle market with the introduction in Frankfurt of its first two series production EVs: the e-up! is going on sale in mid-October, followed by the e-Golf launch in the spring of 2014 (in Germany). Volkswagen itself developed all of the components, including the battery.
