A pre-production XC40 Recharge I drove for an hour last October through rolling suburban hills outside New York City drew little attention, perhaps due to its muted, elegant silvery-green color and black roof.

Their first question is, “Why should I take on the costs of installing EV chargers when most of my tenants don’t own or can’t afford EVs?” The sheer number of U.S. apartment buildings poses another challenge.

Even when there is an expressed interest in purchasing a battery electric or hybrid vehicle, it often did not turn into an actual purchase. A 2022 CarGurus survey found that 35 percent of new car buyers expressed an interest in purchasing a hybrid, but only 13 percent eventually did. This experience is lacking with non-EV owners.

I was involved in the funding of Smith Electric Vehicles , and I helped to build the entire technology stack on the vehicle—battery system, wire harnesses, onboard charger, battery management system, you name it. Washington state has an abundance of power very cheap from all the hydro. Fast-forward to 2017. It’s fragmented.
