The Legislature is taking a step toward giving a Sunshine State boost to the next generation of automobiles: electric-powered cars. An effort led by House Majority Leader Adam Hasner, R-Boca Raton, to give a sales tax exemption to consumers who buy battery-powered, electric vehicles or plug-in hybrids picked up a unanimous endorsement today.

The first wave of electric car buying is expected to begin around December, when Nissan introduces the Leaf, a five-passenger electric car that will have a range of 100 miles on a fully charged battery and be priced for middle-class families. Battery-powered motors are more efficient than gasoline engines.

BYD CEO Wang Chuan-Fu figured out how to make cheaper batteries than the Japanese by replacing machines with migrant workers. The first buyers will be fleet users, which will build central fast-charging facilities.
