The Volt is the plug-in hybrid car GM showed at last January’s Detroit Auto Show. The Volt , provided GM can get the lithium battery right , will go about 40 miles on an electric charge. At that point, the internal combustion engine kicks in and recharges the battery while you are driving. Make that a world changer.

GM has announced plans for public sales in 2010, and almost every carmaker now says it will sell PHEVs or highway-speed battery electric vehicles (BEVs) sometime after 2010. Daimler/Mercedes Took over Daimler/Chrysler Sprinter PHEV program. Shifted earlier focus to all-electric Focus in 2011 with Magna.

Why hes banking on an obscure Chinese electric car company and a CEO who - no joke - drinks his own battery fluid. The car came straight to Omaha from the Detroit auto show. BYD CEO Wang Chuan-Fu figured out how to make cheaper batteries than the Japanese by replacing machines with migrant workers.

The Volt is, and always has been, more than than an electric car. Lutz, who retired earlier this year, called the car Detroits "moon shot" and an attempt to wrest the mantle of innovation back from the Japanese. GM will leapfrog Toyota and Honda by providing an electric car to the masses by the end of next year.
