It is alarming to see comparisons of the Chevrolet Volt PHEV with battery electric cars when the comparison focuses only on the electric range and ignores the other important differences. The 2900 miles traveled by the Volt, drawing upon its combustion engine, produced far less CO 2 since the Volt uses a small and more efficient engine.

German energy firm RWE has stated that a cadre of respected automakers and energy firms have all come together in agreement on a three-point, 400-volt plug that will enable electric cars the world over to be recharged anywhere, regardless of which recharging station they stop at.

The hybrid models available today use lead-acid ornickel-metal hydride batteries that are are proven, reliable, and fairlycheap, but their limited storage capacity means that the cars’ driving rangeusing electricity alone is short. Electric cars remain dependent on the development of better,affordable batteries.

Although charging infrastructure is beginning to find its way into cities, it may be awhile until they are available in residential neighborhoods en masse. Most charge points available today take much longer to re-energize batteries than it does to fill a gas-powered cars tank.
