Public and commercial charging infrastructure companies are struggling to keep up as plug-in electric vehicles become a larger part of the automobile industry. A Chevy Volt, for example, can only get around 15 charging amps on a 240-volt connection, but a Tesla Model S can receive 80. kW to the automobile.

Unlike internal combustion engines, electric motors yield their maximum torque at extremely low rpms, practically from the starting position. They have a large diameter, and yet take up only a few centimeters in length and therefore can be easily integrated between the combustion engine and the transmission.

Several after-market companies have done PHEV conversions of the Ford Escape hybrid and one has done a retrofit of the F-150 pickup -- see Where PHEVs Are and ICE-Conversions.) The four-door sedan will deliver 40 miles on a charge; a small gasoline engine will recharge the battery as it approaches depletion, extending its range by as much as 200 miles. I blame management but it is sad that the engineers and union workers are going to get hurt too. Engineering proptypes enjoy a tax break.
