Blending the MPG of SUVs and small cars understates the real consumption and rewards automakers for building gas hogs and unsafe micro cars which makes people want to buy "safe" gas hogs. The big deal was that the oil industry saw real competition and persuaded GM to abandon the project and crush them all like cans. Never again.
