In China, leading automakers BYD and Chery have announced plans to roll out their own electric models within the next two years. Similarly, in China, the sheer size of the auto industry and the country’s ambitious clean-energy goals suggest a potentially huge market for electric cars. Investors, too, are excited.

Alternative-fuel cars were some of the hottest items on display at the Shanghai auto show from homegrown companies like Geely Automobile Holdings Ltd., and Chery Automobile Co. Chery showed a tiny battery car, the Riichi M1, that boasts similar technology and performance, and is likely to be priced under 100,000 yuan.
