The Methanol Institute (MI) released two new reports on the use of methanol as a safe, efficient and clean alternative fuel for cars, trucks and buses. Neat methanol can also be used in optimized vehicles as a substitute for either gasoline or diesel fuel in both spark-ignition and combustion-ignition engines.

The US Department of Energy (DOE) has selected 25 cost-share projects under the Clean Cities program that will be funded with nearly $300 million from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Selected projects, by size of award, are: State of Wisconsin’s Wisconsin Clean Transportation Program. Total DOE award: $15,000,000.

Today, the term “alternative” is used for all fuels that are not a part of the fossil fuel group—diesel, gasoline, heavy oil and kerosene. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) are considered alternative fuels. Non-drop-in fuels require modified engines or new technology.
