General Motors has joined the Initiative for Responsible Mining Assurance (IRMA), adding another element to company programs that support the sustainability and human rights of the EV supply chain. GM already requires suppliers to meet its standards and adhere to company values throughout the supply chain.

The Government of Canada announced support for the latest cathode active materials (CAM) facility to be operational in Canada, to be built by a joint venture between General Motors (GM) and POSCO Future M in Bécancour, Québec ( earlier post ). The governments of Canada and Québec will each contribute around $150 million to the project.

General Motors and POSCO Chemical are working with the governments of Canada and Québec to build a new $400-million facility in Bécancour, Québec, to produce cathode active material (CAM) for GM’s Ultium batteries, which will power electric vehicles such as the Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC HUMMER EV and Cadillac LYRIQ. With the new BMW round cell specially designed for the electric architecture of the NEUE KLASSE models, it will be possible to increase the range of the highest-range model by up to 30% (according to WLTP). Reuse of raw materials will be one of the success factors for e-mobility in the future. The cell module level is thus eliminated.
