ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Company has filed a US patent application (# 20100326387 , published 30 December 2010) on methods using a wide range of fuel-alcohol blends to expand the operating envelope of engines operating in advanced combustion modes. fuels often do not auto-ignite at low loads.

The Brazilian experience shows that the presence of small (<10%) amounts of water in the fuel does not in itself cause a greater tendency to misfire in spark ignition engines than a proportionate leaning of the fuel/air mixture would do, provided that the vapor pressure of the hydrated ethanol at the ambient temperature is high enough.
