The government sees environmental upsides and a chance for its car makers to gain ground on foreign rivals, since electric vehicles are simpler to engineer than gasoline-engine ones. Making electric vehicles affordable will be critical for them to have an impact on the environment, as vehicle ownership continues to rise quickly.

GM will leapfrog Toyota and Honda by providing an electric car to the masses by the end of next year. The four-door sedan will deliver 40 miles on a charge; a small gasoline engine will recharge the battery as it approaches depletion, extending its range by as much as 200 miles. Thats short-sighted. It also offers eight hybrid models.
