Production was down, shipping routes were closed, and OPEC nations issued embargoes that ensured the United States would be punished for allying itself with Israel. Imports followed shortly thereafter.

Cheap to run but expensive to buy, they offer theprospect of low or zero carbon emissions, but manufacturers won’t sell themunless motorists want to buy them – and motorists won’t buy unless the priceis right and there are enough places to charge the batteries. Is it becuase US market prefers a "home" product?
