The first wave of F-150 production-ready prototype extended range electric vehicles is soon due to be delivered to Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) to kick-off a pilot study in the PG&E fleet. Specs for the powertrain in the F-150 include a 2.0L, 4-cylinder naturally aspirated gasoline engine powering an 82 kW (peak) Remy DC generator.

Several after-market companies have done PHEV conversions of the Ford Escape hybrid and one has done a retrofit of the F-150 pickup -- see Where PHEVs Are and ICE-Conversions.) First Escape PHEV delivered to SCE Nov 2007; 20 in 2008-2009. Shifted earlier focus to all-electric Focus in 2011 with Magna.

They leased a few (at a loss) to those that could afford it. that car was missing precisely what the Volt (and any other would-be electric car under consideration today) is missing -- an appropriate battery technology that provides decent power within a decent weight and space constraint at anything approaching a decent price.
