GM has made three product commitments for 2017 related to its sustainability strategy: to have 500,000 vehicles on the road in the US with some form of electrification ( earlier post ); to double the number of US models that can achieve an EPA-estimated 40 mpg US (5.9 In 2012, GM invested more than $7.3 Earlier post.).

In separate presentations at the 2017 SAE High Efficiency IC Engine Symposium in Detroit, R&D executives from GM and Ford each stressed the importance of improved, advanced fuels—among other technology developments—for their future engine efficiency gains and for long-term CO 2 emissions goals.

Takashi Moriya, Senior Chief Engineer at Honda R&D, re-iterated Honda’s strategic focus on electrification as the main pathway toward reducing greenhouse gases, and shift to renewable sources of energy. Honda also sees the possibility of a “hydrogen-powered society” based on renewable energy and renewable-energy-generated hydrogen.
