The poll results should be welcome news for the Department for Transport which last month announced an incentive scheme that would see grants of up to £5,000 being offered to purchasers of electric powered cars from 2011. They talk of incentives of up to £5,000 for prospective buyers of electric cars from 2011.

Unfortunately for the current generation of electric vehicles, many will not be eligible for the grants, the government’s scheme is likely to assist the sales of the next generation of electric cars and hybrids (such as the plug-in hybrids) which by the government’s own confession are not expected to hit the UK roads until 2011.

Last week the UK Government announced a purchase subsidy of up to £5,000 for every electric car available from 2011. The subsidy is set to come into place in 2011, as the Government believe this is when eligible plug-in hybrids and long range electric cars will become mass-marketed. In London the average car journey is only 4.3

Grants of between £2,000 and £5,000 will be available toordinary motorists to encourage them to buy electric or otherultra-low-carbon cars. The grants will not be available until 2011 and the detail of how they will beallocated and which cars will qualify has still to be worked out. Car buyers were less enthusiastic.
