EPA recently released the latest edition of its annual report Light-Duty Automotive Technology, Carbon Dioxide Emissions and Fuel Economy Trends. The report is the authoritative reference for real-world fuel economy, technology trends and tailpipe carbon dioxide emissions, for new personal vehicles sold in the US every year since 1975.

The majority of the emissions and fuel savings from current vehicles, EPA noted, is due to new gasoline vehicle technologies. The final model year (MY) 2012 adjusted, real world CO 2 emissions rate is 376 g/mi—a 22 g/mi decrease (-5.5%) relative to MY 2011. mpg higher (+5.4%) than MY 2011. mpg, or 22%.

Other highlights in the report include: MY 2010 had the lowest CO 2 emission rate and highest fuel economy since the database began in 1975. In late 2008, BYD started selling the first production PHEV in China. First Escape PHEV delivered to SCE Nov 2007; 20 in 2008-2009.
