Work on a research project developing an actively coupled ultracapacitor-battery system targeted at plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) applications is attracting interest from a variety of OEMs both at a component and a system level, according to Argonne’s Ted Bohn, in his presentation at the Department of Energy Merit Review this week.

This reflects increases in VT’s core R&D activities that support accelerated development of PHEVs, as well as lighter vehicles and more efficient combustion engines. The program’s activities will center on technology development for multiple types of fuel cell systems, including polymer electrolyte, solid oxide, alkaline, and others.

The modular, front-wheel-drive battery electric car has dent-resistant polymer-plastic body panels mounted on an aluminum frame and a steel chassis. Several global indicators on the supply of oil and the known carbon pollution environmental damages its caused all lead us to find cleaner ways of transportation.
