In 2007, our group at the University of Virginia proposed using computer-simulation experiments instead. Together with our colleagues at the University of Padua, in Italy, we created a computer model of glucose-insulin dynamics that operated on 300 virtual subjects with type 1 diabetes. But such testing is time consuming and costly.
