I do not agree with the EPA or the 2007 Supreme Court ruling that gave the Agency that authority. The resulting set of new standards will cover model years 2012-2016, and will require an average fuel economy standard of 35.5 mpg in 2016 (39 mpg for cars, 30 mpg for trucks), or approximately 250 grams CO 2 /mile.

Closer to home, the federal fuel economy standards require the average fleet fuel economy of OEMs that sell vehicles in the USA to be 35.5 mpg by 2016. As private companies, automobile manufacturers look for the lowest cost means of getting from A to B and the premiums that they can charge for getting from A to B faster.
