Because the exhaust system transports only water, it can be made of lightweight polymer. An outer skin made from carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) encases the inner aluminum shell. The first technology demonstrator was the compact A2H2 in 2004, which was already equipped with a polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEM).
