GM began producing cars on its J Platform beginning in 1981 , and the J-Body proved to be a tremendous global sales success for The General. In the United States, the introductory J Family models for the 1982 model year were the Chevrolet Cavalier , Pontiac J2000 , Oldsmobile Firenza , Buick Skyhawk and Cadillac Cimarron.

GM is also in the process of bringing Cadillac’s entire global portfolio to China, adding one locally produced model per year through 2016. Earlier this year, it introduced the locally produced XTS luxury sedan as well as the refreshed SRX luxury SUV, which is Cadillac’s best-selling model in China. —Gary Smyth.

Created from the old GM’s strongest operations in an asset sale approved by the Federal bankruptcy court on 5 July ( earlier post ), the new GM is built on four core brands: Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC. The four brands will offer a total of 34 nameplates by 2010, compared to old GM’s total of 48 in 2008 and 63 in 2004.
