A fleet of 500 taxis navigated by computers, often with no safety drivers in them for backup, buzz around. The company that operates them, tech giant Baidu, said last month that it would add another 1,000 of the so-called robot taxis in Wuhan. Cruise has resumed limited testing in Phoenix. Surveys by J.D. While San Francisco was one of Waymo’s early testing sites, it is lagging behind the Phoenix metropolitan region in terms of autonomous ride-hailing commercialization. Because in 2017, Waymo began providing rides to Phoenix residents and though the company didn’t make considerable money, the program is said to be a success.

It seemed a shame not to let people see them together, so on the March day we drove the Ioniq 6 at a media preview in Phoenix, we rented a Model 3 so we could photograph the pair side by side. As for power, the front and rear motors in the Ioniq 6 are rated at 74 and 165 kilowatts (100 and 221 horsepower) and 446 lb-ft of torque.
