Since it first began operation in April 2017, the Project Portal “Alpha” truck has logged nearly 10,000 miles of testing and real-world drayage operations in and around the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles while emitting nothing but water vapor. Our goal with the first truck was to see if it could be accomplished, and we did that.

New vehicles to be deployed include 55 CNG vehicles, 363 propane vehicles, 89 hybrid electric vehicles, and 56 neighborhood electric vehicles. The project will replace 180 diesel drayage trucks at the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach with LNG trucks. Total DOE award: $12,975,388. Total DOE award: $5,924,190.

Case New Holland brought out a methane-powered tractor that [runs on methane] made from farm waste. The primary customers right now are the ports—Port of Long Beach, Port of Los Angeles­—and the ports around the country are usually in urban environments. So those vehicles will probably go electric pretty quickly. Garbage trucks.
