Axelrod worked as an engineer for a number of companies in various industries. After earning a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from Washington University in St. Louis, Axelrod joined the U.S. For more than 50 years, he was an active member of B'nai Torah Synagogue in Highland Park, Ill.—now now closed.
