In all, the grants are spread across 17 states with 43 per cent of the cash going to small businesses, 35 per cent to educational institutions and 19 per cent to large corporations. They have received a grant of $4,462,162.

The grants come from the US Departments of Energy and Agriculture under a joint DOE-USDA program that began in 2006. Finally, the University of Nebraska, in Lincoln, has been awarded $390,000 to enhance the ability of sweet sorghum to utilise nitrogen and increase its potential as a cost-effective bioenergy crop.
