SAE International publishes new J2954 wireless charging standard

SAE International has published the first global standard that specifies, in a single document, both the electric vehicle and supply equipment (EVSE) ground-system requirements for wireless charging of electric vehicles (EV). The technology is a safe and efficient method for transferring power from the AC grid supply to the electric vehicle.

The SAE J1772 “Electric Vehicle and Plug In Hybrid Electric Vehicle Conducive Charge Coupler” standard—agreed to in 2009 and officially published by SAE International in January 2010—was the world’s first industry-consensus standard to provide critical guidelines for safety, charging control and connectors used to charge EVs/PHEVs.
