In the US, Chrysler and General Motors fell into bankruptcy; while in Japan even its major automakers have been left reeling from significant profit falls. With the Nissan LEAF still around a year away from hitting the streets, Mitsubishi has stolen a march on its rival by introducing the i-MiEV in Japan (see article ).

General Motors Corp., Toyota Motor Corp. and startups Tesla Motors Inc. Tax Credits Instead, Obama backed tax credits of as much as $7,500 inthe stimulus package approved in February for buyers of plug-incars. In July, itopened an assembly line in Japan to build its FCX Clarity.

Several thousand Leafs made in Japan will be delivered to metropolitan areas in California, Arizona, Washington state, Oregon and Tennessee. Around the same time, General Motors will introduce the Chevrolet Volt, a vehicle able to go 40 miles on electricity before its small gasoline engine kicks in.
