The costs and benefits of cars extend far beyond an individual driver to society as a whole. But when people talk about payback, they refer only to the net dollars to the driver. Dont PHEVs just shift pollution from gasoline cars to power plants? But its monumentally less pollution , even on the national (half-coal) grid.
