The president is hoping to use incentives to get one million plug-in hybrid vehicles to consumers by 2015. Plug-in hybrids differ from hybrids on the road today in that they can go longer distances on battery power and can be recharged via electrical outlets. Which has the longest range? Five million. Two million.

The head of Chryslers ENVI division, Lou Rhodes, told AutoblogGreen this morning that Chrysler is marketing this battery-only version of the van to commercial fleet customers who typically have shorter range requirements. For extended range I guess one could carry a fairly modest generator set in the trunk to avoid ever being stranded. i think this is the best idea simply because of the ease of such a plan. Of course, EVs that arent designed for battery swaps wont use it, and plug-in hybrids wont need it. not an issue.
