For extended range I guess one could carry a fairly modest generator set in the trunk to avoid ever being stranded. Of course, EVs that arent designed for battery swaps wont use it, and plug-in hybrids wont need it. Companies like ECOtality are already working with Nissan, which seems to have given up on battery swapping.
