Chevrolet Volts: extended range electric vehicles (EREVs). The EV Project: charging infrastructure, Nissan Leafs, Chevrolet Volts and Car2Go Smart EVs. SCAQMD/EPRI/Via Motors: PHEV vans and pickups. When privately owned Volts are charged frequently, they achieved better than 120 mpg in normal consumer use patterns.

Eaton will work with grant recipient South Coast Air Quality Management District (SCAQMD) and other affiliates, including the Electrical Power Research Institute (EPRI), Altec Industries, Compact Power Inc., Mark Duvall, director of Electric Transportation at EPRI. This will represent the largest deployment of commercial PHEVs to date.

Here's one of the announcements that came out of the conference : EPRI, GM, 34 Utilities Collaborate to Advance Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles PALO ALTO, Calif. Additionally, research released last year by EPRI and the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) pointed to the potential of PHEVs to lower greenhouse gas emissions.

California’s electricity capacity could recharge as many as 4 million plug-in hybrids when charged during off-peak hours when electricity use is low. The converted plug-in hybrids recharge their batteries through a standard 110-volt household outlet and charge in five to six hours for a 5 kWh lithium-ion battery.

Who is going to install that 240 volt charging system in the garage if that’s what somebody chooses to do? That’s not our choice, that’s the electrical code. And so here comes challenge number one.

You can fill it up at the gas station, and you can plug it in to any 120-volt outlet. The program is in cooperation with Californias Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), South Coast Air Quality Management District, and Southern California Edison.
