Ford Motor Company has developed an intelligent vehicle-to-grid communications and control system for its plug-in hybrid electric vehicles that communicates directly with the electric grid. All 21 of Ford’s fleet of plug-in hybrid Escapes eventually will be equipped with the vehicle-to-grid communications technology.

An intelligent vehicle-to-grid communications and control system for its plug-in hybrid electric vehicles that “talks” directly with the nation’s electric grid has been unveiled today courtesy of carmaker, Ford. when electricity rates are cheaper, or when the grid is using only renewable energy such as wind or solar power.

Plug-In Hybrids Are Cleaner (Even on a Coal Grid) [ to top ] This entire section is finally obsolete -- because we now have a definitive study by the Electric Power Research Institute and the Natural Resources Defense Council. Only PHEVs and battery EVs get cleaner as they get older - because the electric grid gets cleaner every decade.

Standards under development in these areas include: J1711: Emissions and Fuel Economy Testing. Such procedures will be used during exhaust emissions tests and fuel economy certification tests, and may be used for future “charge economy” certification tests. J2464: Battery Pack and Capacitor Pack Safety.

Small long-term evaluation program, including modeling of vehicle-to-grid building benefits and economics, begun with Southern California Edison, joined by EPRI, other utilities, US DOE. Has shown some concept fuel-cell PHEVs. Blue Concept PHEV Van with diesel or hydrogen fuel cells and rooftop photovoltaic.
