ABB has inaugurated the first OppCharge fast-charging station for electric buses in Benelux, in the commuter belt town of Bertrange, Luxembourg. Bus operator Sales-Lentz will use the charger to recharge electric hybrid buses from Volvo. —François Bausch, Minister for Sustainable Development and Infrastructure in Luxembourg.

Volvo Bus’ plug-in hybrid. Field tests being conducted in Gothenburg show that Volvo Buses’ plug-in hybrid reduces fuel consumption by 81% and total energy consumption (diesel plus electricity) by 61% compared to a comparable Euro 5 diesel bus. That’s 81% less fuel than the equivalent diesel bus consumes.

As part of a new development partnership, Volvo Buses will deliver three Volvo Electric plug-in hybrids to Hamburger Hochbahn AG. The new buses are diesel-electric hybrid buses that can travel up to 10 km using only electricity. Charging stations at the respective termini of the routes provide for the necessary recharging.

As previously announced ( earlier post ), Volvo Buses will officially launch the new plug-in 7900 Electric Hybrid bus at the International IAA Commercial Vehicles show in September. The plug-in hybrid drive reduces diesel fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by up to 75%, compared to a conventional diesel bus.
