This week, the Virginia Department of Transportation (DOT) announced the first round of National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) federal grant winners.

To install 4-180 kW chargers can easily cost roughly $500,000-$800,000 depending on the hardware chosen. With the Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill grants covering up to 80% of the cost of charging infrastructure projects, that means that a charging location with 8-180 kW chargers can easily cost taxpayers $1 million.

Plus installation. My installation was pretty simple, so it cost me nothing. I am pleased to participate in the EV Project, which came late to the San Francisco Bay Area, and happy to get my tax-payer funded charger and DC Fast port. Something Ecotality couldn’t do even with $100 million in federal grant money.
